Photosynthetic Pigments
ஒளிச்சேர்க்கை நிறமிகள்
Stop assuming all green leaves are identical. The variation in photosynthetic pigments is an evolutionary adaptation to maximize photon capture across the spectrum. If you confuse the absorption spectra of Chlorophyll a and b, you lose marks on the most fundamental process of life.
The idea
Leaf pigments are separated via paper chromatography. Chlorophyll a appears bright or blue-green, while chlorophyll b is yellow-green. Xanthophylls are yellow, and carotenoids range from yellow to yellow-orange. Chlorophyll a is the primary pigment, acting as the reaction center for photosynthesis.
Why it matters
Accessory pigments absorb a wider range of light wavelengths and protect chlorophyll a from photo-oxidation.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the color-pigment correlation and the 'chief pigment' status of Chlorophyll a. Memorize the specific color shades provided in NCERT; examiners often swap 'yellow-green' and 'blue-green' in matching questions. Expect at least one question on the role of accessory pigments in broadening the absorption spectrum.
Clinical significance
Carotenoids act as essential antioxidants in the human retina, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin. A deficiency in these pigments leads to Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Without these protective pigments, high-energy blue light causes oxidative damage to photoreceptor cells.
Introduction
Photosynthetic pigments are light-absorbing molecules in chloroplasts that capture light energy for photosynthesis. They include chlorophylls, carotenoids (carotenes and xanthophylls), and phycobilins.
Core concept
Chlorophyll a: primary pigment, blue-green, absorbs red (670–680 nm) and blue (430–450 nm). Chlorophyll b: accessory, yellow-green, absorbs at slightly different wavelengths than Chl a. Carotenes: orange-yellow (β-carotene most common). Xanthophylls: yellow (oxygenated carotenoids). Phycobilins: in red algae and cyanobacteria (phycoerythrin, phycocyanin). All feed absorbed energy to reaction center chlorophyll a via resonance transfer.
Go deeper
Antenna complex: array of hundreds of pigment molecules that funnel light energy to the reaction center. Accessory pigments extend the wavelength range of light usable for photosynthesis — collectively they absorb across the visible spectrum, making the whole process more efficient.
From Class 10
Leaves are green because of chlorophyll. But plants contain other pigments too — each absorbing different wavelengths of light.
