Light Reaction

NCERT Class 11 · Photosynthesis in Higher Plants · 7 NEET questions

Stop confusing the site of reaction with the site of synthesis. Light reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes, not the stroma. If you miss this location, you lose the entire bioenergetic framework of the chloroplast.

The idea

Light reactions, or the photochemical phase, encompass light absorption, water splitting, oxygen release, and the formation of high-energy chemical intermediates, ATP and NADPH. These processes occur specifically within the thylakoid membranes. Pigment systems (PS I and PS II) capture light energy to drive electron transport. This phase is essential for providing the substrates required for the subsequent biosynthetic phase.

Why it matters

To convert light energy into chemical energy (ATP and NADPH) required for the subsequent carbon fixation reactions.

NEET lens

NEET frequently tests the sequence of events and the specific location of the reaction. Memorize that PS II comes before PS I in the Z-scheme, despite their naming order. Do not confuse the products of light reaction with the products of the Calvin cycle.

Clinical significance

Photosynthesis is the primary source of atmospheric oxygen. If the water-splitting complex fails, oxygen evolution ceases, leading to immediate ecosystem collapse. In humans, hypoxia is the direct consequence of such atmospheric instability.

Introduction

Light reactions (photo-reactions) are the first stage of photosynthesis, occurring on thylakoid membranes, where light energy is absorbed and converted into chemical energy (ATP and NADPH) with O₂ released.

Core concept

Location: thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. Key components: Photosystem I (PS I, P700 reaction center), Photosystem II (PS II, P680 reaction center). Sequence: light absorbed by PS II → photoexcitation → electrons lost from P680 → replaced by water splitting (photolysis: 2H₂O → 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ + O₂). Excited electrons flow through ETC → ATP synthesis (photophosphorylation). Electrons reach PS I → excited again → reduce NADP⁺ → NADPH.

Go deeper

The order is counterintuitive: PSII is discovered first in the electron transport chain despite being called 'II'. PSII comes BEFORE PSI in the electron flow (Z scheme). Water is split at PSII. NADPH is made at PSI. Remember: 2 comes before 1 in the pathway.

From Class 10

Photosynthesis has two stages. The first stage uses light directly to make energy carriers. These are the light reactions.
