Population Attributes

மக்கள் தொகை பண்புகள்

NCERT Class 12 · Organisms and Populations · 1 NEET question

An individual organism is born and dies, but it does not have a birth rate or a death rate. These are population-level attributes, not individual traits. Confuse the two, and you lose marks on the very first page of the Ecology unit.

The idea

A population is a group of individuals of the same species in a given area. Key attributes include birth rate (natality), death rate (mortality), sex ratio, and age distribution. Age distribution is represented by age pyramids, showing pre-reproductive, reproductive, and post-reproductive stages. These metrics are essential to determine if a population is growing, stable, or declining.

Why it matters

These attributes exist to quantify the collective dynamics of a group, enabling the study of evolution and natural selection at the population level.

NEET lens

NEET frequently tests the distinction between individual and population attributes. Memorize the definitions of natality and mortality as per NCERT. Expect match-the-following questions on age pyramid shapes (triangular, urn-shaped, bell-shaped). Do not ignore the sex ratio definition; it is a high-yield, low-effort question.

Clinical significance

In human populations, skewed sex ratios or imbalanced age structures lead to demographic crises. When the reproductive age group shrinks, the population growth rate collapses, leading to an aging society. This mirrors the ecological collapse seen in species with low recruitment rates.

Introduction

A population has attributes that an individual organism does not — birth rate, death rate, sex ratio and age distribution.

Core concept

Birth rate and death rate are expressed per capita (e.g. 0.4 offspring per lotus per year; 0.1 individuals per fruit fly per week). Sex ratio — e.g. 60 per cent of the population are females and 40 per cent males. Age distribution: plotted as an age pyramid of pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive age groups — the shape reflects growth status: expanding (triangular), stable (bell-shaped) or declining (urn-shaped). Population density (N) is the number of individuals per unit area; it need not always be a total count — it can be measured as per cent cover or biomass, or estimated indirectly (e.g. tiger census using pug marks and faecal pellets). Population size is not static: it changes with food availability, predation pressure and adverse weather.

Go deeper

Individuals are born and die; only populations have rates. That is why these are called population attributes.

From Class 10

A village has a number of people, a birth rate, a death rate and a mix of children, adults and elderly — those are its population attributes.
