NCERT Class 12 · Organisms and Populations · 0 NEET questions

Do not confuse a mere collection of organisms with a population. A population is a functional unit defined by interbreeding and resource competition. If they cannot exchange genes, they are not a population.

The idea

A population consists of individuals of the same species occupying a specific geographical area. They share or compete for resources and possess the potential to interbreed. Crucially, even organisms reproducing asexually are classified as populations in ecological studies. This definition is the foundation for understanding population density and dynamics.

Why it matters

Organisms live in groups to increase survival chances through collective resource utilization, protection, and reproductive success.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the 'interbreeding' and 'same species' criteria. Expect questions identifying populations versus communities. Remember: asexual organisms are included—do not exclude them based on the lack of sexual reproduction.

Clinical significance

In human medicine, this concept defines the spread of infectious diseases. A dense, interbreeding human population facilitates rapid pathogen transmission. When population density exceeds carrying capacity, resource depletion leads to malnutrition and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections.

Introduction

In nature, individuals of a given species rarely live in isolation; they live in groups in a well-defined geographical area, share or compete for similar resources, potentially interbreed and thus constitute a population.

Core concept

Although the term interbreeding implies sexual reproduction, a group of individuals resulting from even asexual reproduction is also generally considered a population for the purpose of ecological studies. Examples: all the cormorants in a wetland, rats in an abandoned dwelling, teakwood trees in a forest tract, bacteria in a culture plate, and lotus plants in a pond. Population ecology is an important area because it links ecology to population genetics and evolution: natural selection operates at the population level to evolve the desired traits.

Go deeper

A population has attributes — birth rate, death rate, sex ratio, age distribution and density — that individuals do not.

From Class 10

All the people in your town form a population. All the mango trees in an orchard form a population of mango trees.
