Mutualism

கூட்டுறவு வாழ்க்கை

NCERT Class 12 · Organisms and Populations · 5 NEET questions

Nature does not trade in charity; it trades in survival. Mutualism is not friendship; it is a high-stakes evolutionary contract where both species gain fitness. If you confuse this with Commensalism, you lose 4 marks.

The idea

Mutualism is a positive interaction where both interacting species benefit. Lichens represent an obligate mutualism between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. Mycorrhizae demonstrate the association between fungi and roots of higher plants, facilitating phosphorus absorption. These interactions are essential for ecosystem stability.

Why it matters

It provides a survival advantage by allowing species to exchange essential resources or services that neither could obtain alone.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on specific examples: Lichens, Mycorrhizae, and the Fig-Wasp pollination mechanism. Memorize the 'Obligate' nature of these relationships. Expect matching-type questions where you must distinguish between Mutualism (+/+), Commensalism (+/0), and Amensalism (-/0).

Clinical significance

Human gut microbiome is a classic example of mutualism. When this balance is disrupted by antibiotics, opportunistic pathogens like Clostridioides difficile thrive. Your health depends on this microbial symbiosis.

Introduction

Mutualism is an interaction that confers benefits on both the interacting species (+, +).

Core concept

Examples (NCERT): lichens — an intimate mutualistic relationship between a fungus and photosynthesising algae or cyanobacteria; mycorrhizae — associations between fungi and the roots of higher plants (fungi help absorb nutrients; plants provide carbohydrates); plant-animal interactions for pollination and seed dispersal — plants offer rewards (pollen, nectar) and animals provide pollination; fig trees and wasps — each fig species can be pollinated only by its 'partner' wasp species; the female wasp uses the fruit as an oviposition (egg-laying) site and the developing seeds within the fruit for nourishing its larvae; the wasp pollinates the fig inflorescence while searching for suitable egg-laying sites. The Mediterranean orchid Ophrys employs 'sexual deceit': one petal resembles the female bee, which the male bee pseudocopulates with, picking up and transferring pollen.

Go deeper

Plant-pollinator mutualisms often show co-evolution: if the female bee's colour patterns change, the orchid's flower must co-evolve for pollination to continue.

From Class 10

Bees get nectar from flowers and in return carry pollen between them — both benefit. That is mutualism.
