Ovary Position
சூலகப்பையின் நிலை
Stop guessing ovary positions. In NEET, the thalamus is the reference point, not the petals. Misidentify the thalamus, and you lose four marks instantly.
The idea
Flowers are classified by the position of the gynoecium relative to other floral parts. In hypogynous flowers, the gynoecium occupies the highest position on the thalamus, making the ovary superior. Perigynous flowers have the ovary at the center, with other parts arranged at the rim, resulting in a half-inferior ovary. Epigynous flowers show the thalamus growing upward, completely enclosing the ovary and fusing with it, rendering the ovary inferior.
Why it matters
The position of the ovary relative to other floral parts is a key evolutionary trait that protects the developing ovules and influences fruit development.
NEET lens
NEET loves matching questions here. Memorize the NCERT examples: Mustard, China rose, Brinjal for hypogynous; Plum, Rose, Peach for perigynous; Guava, Cucumber, Ray florets of sunflower for epigynous. Do not confuse 'half-inferior' with 'inferior'. If the question mentions 'epigynous', the answer must be 'inferior ovary'.
Clinical significance
In plant biology, ovary position dictates fruit development and seed protection. If the ovary is inferior, the fruit incorporates the thalamus, creating a 'false fruit' or pseudocarp. This evolutionary adaptation ensures better protection for the seeds against environmental stressors.
Introduction
Ovary position describes where the ovary sits in relation to the receptacle and other floral whorls — superior, inferior, or half-inferior.
Core concept
Superior ovary (hypogynous flower): ovary above other parts — calyx, corolla, stamens attached below. Example: mustard, brinjal. Inferior ovary (epigynous): ovary below — other parts appear to grow from top of ovary. Example: guava, sunflower. Half-inferior (perigynous): rose, plum.
Go deeper
Epigyny (inferior ovary) evolved multiple times — provides protection to ovary. In compositae (sunflower), the inferior ovary is characteristic of the entire family.
From Class 10
You know flowers have ovaries containing ovules. The ovary's position relative to other floral parts is called ovary position.
