Fruit Development
கனி உருவாக்கம்
Do not mistake a fruit for a mere food item. It is the biological end-product of a successful fertilization event in an angiosperm. If the ovary matures without fertilization, the plant has bypassed the sexual cycle entirely.
The idea
A fruit is defined as the mature or ripened ovary that develops post-fertilization. During this process, the ovary wall transforms into the pericarp, while the ovules develop into seeds. When fruit formation occurs without fertilization, the resulting structure is termed a parthenocarpic fruit. This process is strictly distinct from apomixis, which involves seed formation without fertilization.
Why it matters
Fruits protect the developing seeds and aid in their dispersal to new locations for plant propagation.
NEET lens
NEET examiners frequently test the distinction between parthenocarpy and apomixis. Remember: Parthenocarpy = fruit without fertilization; Apomixis = seed without fertilization. Expect a matching-type question on the definition of pericarp and the origin of seeds from ovules.
Clinical significance
Parthenocarpy is an evolutionary survival strategy, but in human nutrition, it eliminates seeds, which are primary sources of lipids and proteins. Failure in proper fruit development leads to crop yield collapse, directly impacting food security and the availability of essential phytochemicals required for human metabolic health.
Introduction
Fruit development involves the transformation of the fertilized ovary into a fruit, involving growth, differentiation, and ripening of the pericarp.
Core concept
True fruit: develops from ovary only. False fruit (pseudocarp): thalamus or other floral parts contribute — apple (thalamus), cashew (peduncle). Pericarp layers: exocarp (outer), mesocarp (middle), endocarp (inner). Parthenocarpy: fruit without fertilization (banana). Parthenogenesis = fruit from unfertilized egg.
Go deeper
Apple: the edible part is the fleshy thalamus (receptacle), not the ovary wall. The actual ovary is the core. Strawberry — receptacle is fleshy, actual fruits are achenes on surface.
From Class 10
After fertilization, ovules become seeds and ovaries become fruits. This transformation is fruit development.
