Adventitious Roots

NCERT Class 11 · Morphology of Flowering Plants · 1 NEET question

Most students fail to distinguish between the radicle and other plant parts. If a root originates from the plumule or internodes, it is not a primary root. This is a fundamental classification error that costs you 4 marks in the Morphology section.

The idea

Roots arising from any part of the plant other than the radicle are termed adventitious roots. In plants like Monstera, Banyan tree, and grass, the radicle does not persist as the primary root. Instead, these adventitious roots emerge to provide anchorage and absorption. They are distinct from the tap root system derived from the radicle.

Why it matters

These roots provide additional support, vegetative propagation, or help in climbing, allowing plants to colonize diverse habitats.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on examples: Grass, Monstera, and Banyan. Do not confuse adventitious roots with fibrous roots; fibrous roots are a type of adventitious root system. Expect matching-type questions where you must identify the plant and its root modification. Memorize the NCERT list strictly.

Clinical significance

In ecosystem stability, adventitious roots like prop roots in Banyan trees prevent soil erosion and structural collapse of the plant. If these roots fail, the plant loses its mechanical support, leading to the destruction of the local micro-habitat. This is analogous to the loss of structural integrity in human connective tissues leading to skeletal instability.

Introduction

Adventitious roots arise from any part of the plant other than the radicle. They serve various functions including support, storage, and absorption.

Core concept

Types: Prop roots (Banyan — descend from branches for support). Stilt roots (maize, sugarcane — arise from lower nodes). Pneumatophores (Rhizophora/mangroves — vertical roots for gas exchange). Storage roots (carrot, radish — swollen for food). Climbing roots (money plant — for attachment). Assimilatory roots (Trapa — green, photosynthetic).

Go deeper

Banyan tree's prop roots allow it to spread indefinitely — The Great Banyan in Kolkata has over 3,500 prop roots and covers ~1.5 hectares. Pneumatophores have lenticels for gas exchange in waterlogged soil.

From Class 10

Normal roots grow from the radicle. But some plants grow roots from stems, leaves, or other unusual places — these are adventitious roots.
