Biocontrol Agents

உயிரியல் கட்டுப்பாட்டு காரணிகள்

NCERT Class 12 · Microbes in Human Welfare · 2 NEET questions

Chemical pesticides are a lazy, toxic shortcut that destroys soil biodiversity. Nature already has a built-in regulatory mechanism through predation and parasitism. If you don't understand these ecological interactions, you are missing the foundation of sustainable agriculture.

The idea

Biocontrol agents utilize natural predation to manage pest populations, replacing hazardous synthetic chemicals. For example, Ladybird beetles control aphids, and Dragonflies eliminate mosquitoes. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a microbial biocontrol agent used to kill butterfly caterpillars, while Trichoderma species are free-living fungi effective against several plant pathogens.

Why it matters

It exists to maintain ecological balance and reduce the environmental pollution caused by the indiscriminate use of chemical insecticides and pesticides.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on specific examples: match the agent to its target. Memorize that Bt cotton is a GMO, not a direct biocontrol agent, but the bacterium itself is. Do not confuse the predator (Ladybird) with the pathogen (Trichoderma).

Clinical significance

When biocontrol fails, we rely on chemical pesticides which accumulate in the food chain, leading to biomagnification. This results in chronic human toxicity, including endocrine disruption and neurological disorders. Maintaining ecological balance is the only way to prevent these systemic health failures.

Introduction

Biocontrol refers to the use of biological methods for controlling plant diseases and pests, instead of toxic chemical pesticides.

Core concept

Examples (NCERT): Ladybird beetles (with red and black markings) — get rid of aphids; dragonflies — get rid of mosquitoes; Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) — controls butterfly caterpillars; Trichoderma — free-living fungi in root ecosystems, effective biocontrol agents of several plant pathogens; Baculoviruses — pathogens that attack insects and other arthropods; most used as biological control agents are in the genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus — species-specific, narrow-spectrum insecticides with no negative impact on plants, mammals, birds, fish or non-target insects, desirable in integrated pest management (IPM). Organic farmers aim to keep pests at manageable levels through a complex system of checks and balances within a living ecosystem rather than eradicating them.

Go deeper

Eradicating pests completely is undesirable: without them, beneficial predatory and parasitic insects that depend on them would not survive.

From Class 10

Instead of spraying chemicals, farmers can use natural enemies like ladybird beetles to eat pests.
