Implantation

கருப்பதித்தல்

NCERT Class 12 · Human Reproduction · 1 NEET question

Implantation is not a random event; it is a biological deadline. If the blastocyst fails to embed in the endometrium within the narrow window of the secretory phase, the corpus luteum regresses and menstruation begins. Do not confuse this with fertilization; fertilization happens in the ampulla, but pregnancy begins only here.

The idea

The blastocyst reaches the uterus and its trophoblast cells attach to the endometrium. The uterine cells divide rapidly and cover the blastocyst. This process of embedding the blastocyst into the uterine wall is called implantation. It results in the formation of pregnancy.

Why it matters

It allows the developing embryo to establish a physical and nutritional connection with the mother's body.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the stage of the embryo: it is the 'blastocyst', not the morula or zygote. Memorize that implantation is the trigger for pregnancy. Examiners often swap 'endometrium' with 'myometrium' in options to test your anatomical precision. Expect questions linking the hormonal control of the endometrium to this process.

Clinical significance

Failure of implantation in the uterus leads to ectopic pregnancy, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. This is a medical emergency as the tube cannot support the growing fetus. It is a leading cause of maternal morbidity in the first trimester.

Introduction

Implantation is the process by which the blastocyst embeds into the endometrium (uterine lining) approximately 6-10 days after fertilization, establishing the physical and hormonal connection required for pregnancy.

Core concept

Timing: fertilization (Day 0, ampulla) → cleavage → morula (Day 4) → blastocyst (Day 5) → reaches uterus → hatching from zona pellucida → implantation (Day 6-10). Blastocyst structure: Inner cell mass (ICM/embryoblast) → embryo proper. Trophoblast (outer) → placenta. Implantation steps: (1) Apposition: blastocyst loosely contacts endometrium. (2) Adhesion: ICM pole of blastocyst contacts endometrium → trophoblast expresses adhesion molecules (integrins, L-selectin) → attach to endometrial epithelium. (3) Invasion: syncytiotrophoblast invades endometrial stroma → decidualization (stromal cells become decidual cells). Implantation site: usually posterior wall of uterine body (most common). hCG secretion: begins Day 8-9 → detectable in blood → pregnancy test positive.

Go deeper

Implantation window: endometrium receptive only Days 20-24 (of 28-day cycle) = 'implantation window'. Outside this window: blastocyst cannot implant. Window determined by progesterone (from corpus luteum) → endometrial transformation. Pinopodes (uterine surface specializations) appear only during window → aid blastocyst attachment.

From Class 10

After fertilization, the developing embryo must attach to the uterine wall to receive nutrients and continue developing. This attachment is called implantation.
