Opioids
ஓபியாய்டுகள்
Do not mistake opioids for simple painkillers. They are molecular keys that hijack your central nervous system's own regulatory pathways. If you cannot identify the receptor site, you have already lost a mark.
The idea
Opioids bind to specific receptors located in the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. Heroin, chemically known as diacetylmorphine, is a white, odorless, bitter crystalline compound. It is extracted from the latex of the poppy plant, Papaver somniferum. It acts as a depressant and slows down body functions.
Why it matters
The body has natural receptors for these compounds, which are involved in pain modulation and physiological regulation.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the source plant and the chemical nature of heroin. Remember: Heroin is a depressant, not a stimulant. Always link the receptor location to the CNS and GI tract for the matching-type questions.
Clinical significance
Opioid overdose leads to severe respiratory depression by suppressing the brain's respiratory center. This failure of homeostatic control results in hypoxia and eventual cardiac arrest. The gastrointestinal tract also suffers, as opioids cause significant constipation by slowing down peristalsis.
Introduction
Opioids are drugs that bind to specific opioid receptors present in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.
Core concept
Heroin, commonly called smack, is chemically diacetylmorphine — a white, odourless, bitter crystalline compound obtained by acetylation of morphine, which is extracted from the latex of the poppy plant Papaver somniferum. Heroin is generally taken by snorting and injection; it is a depressant and slows down body functions. Morphine is a very effective sedative and painkiller and is very useful in patients who have undergone surgery.
Go deeper
Drugs normally used as medicines (morphine, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, amphetamines) are often misused when taken for purposes other than medicinal use or in excessive amounts.
From Class 10
Opium from the poppy plant is the source of strong painkillers like morphine — and of dangerous drugs like heroin.
