Cannabinoids

கன்னாபினாய்டுகள்

NCERT Class 12 · Human Health and Disease · 0 NEET questions

Cannabinoids are not just 'drugs'; they are chemical keys that hijack your brain’s natural signaling pathways. If you think they only affect the nervous system, you are missing the cardiovascular impact. NEET examiners love to test your knowledge of receptor localization. Pay attention.

The idea

Cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that interact with specific cannabinoid receptors located principally in the brain. These compounds are derived from the inflorescences of the plant Cannabis sativa. Natural cannabinoids like marijuana, hashish, charas, and ganja are produced from these plant parts. They are primarily known for their effects on the cardiovascular system of the body.

Why it matters

These compounds affect the cardiovascular system and brain function, often leading to altered perception and mood.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the source: 'inflorescences' of Cannabis sativa. Do not confuse the plant part with leaves or roots. Remember: Cannabinoid receptors are primarily in the brain, but the clinical effect is on the cardiovascular system.

Clinical significance

Excessive cannabinoid consumption leads to tachycardia and impaired cognitive function. Chronic use disrupts the endocannabinoid system, which regulates mood, memory, and pain sensation. This results in long-term neurological and cardiovascular instability.

Introduction

Cannabinoids are a group of chemicals that interact with cannabinoid receptors present principally in the brain.

Core concept

Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescences of the plant Cannabis sativa. The flower tops, leaves and resin of the cannabis plant are used in various combinations to produce marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja. Generally taken by inhalation and oral ingestion, they are known for their effects on the cardiovascular system of the body. These days cannabinoids are also being abused by some sportspersons.

Go deeper

Coca alkaloid (cocaine) from Erythroxylum coca and hallucinogenic plants like Atropa belladonna and Datura are other drug sources in the same NCERT section.

From Class 10

Some plants contain chemicals that strongly affect the brain. Cannabis is one, and its products like ganja and charas are illegal drugs in India.
