Convergent Evolution

NCERT Class 12 · Evolution · 2 NEET questions

Do not confuse Analogous organs with Homologous organs. NEET examiners love to swap these definitions to trap you. Convergent evolution is the process where unrelated species develop similar functional traits. If you miss this distinction, you lose four marks.

The idea

Convergent evolution occurs when different structures evolve similar functions due to adaptation to identical ecological niches. This results in the formation of analogous organs. These organs have different anatomical origins and developmental patterns but perform the same function. Examples include the wings of a butterfly and a bird, or the flippers of penguins and dolphins.

Why it matters

It exists because similar environmental pressures often favor the same functional solutions, leading to analogous structures.

NEET lens

NEET asks for specific examples of analogous organs. Memorize the NCERT list: Sweet potato (root) and Potato (stem) are the classic examples of convergent evolution. Never mistake them for homologous structures. Always check if the question asks for 'common ancestry' (Divergent) or 'common function' (Convergent).

Clinical significance

In ecosystems, convergent evolution ensures functional stability when a niche is occupied by different species. If this adaptation fails, the species faces extinction due to an inability to compete for resources. In human medicine, this principle explains why different pathogens can evolve similar resistance mechanisms against the same antibiotic.

Introduction

Convergent evolution is the process by which different, unrelated groups of organisms evolve similar features because they live in similar habitats. The structures formed are analogous.

Core concept

Examples: flippers of penguins and dolphins; wings of butterflies and birds; eyes of octopus and mammals; sweet potato and potato; placental and marsupial mammals in Australia that look alike (e.g. placental wolf and Tasmanian wolf, flying squirrel and flying phalanger, mole and marsupial mole). Convergence does not mean common ancestry; it reflects similar selection pressures.

Go deeper

Divergent evolution produces homologous organs from a common ancestor; convergent evolution produces analogous organs in unrelated lines.

From Class 10

Penguins are birds and dolphins are mammals, yet both have paddle-like flippers for swimming. That similar solution is convergent evolution.
