Pyramid of Energy

ஆற்றல் பிரமிடு

NCERT Class 12 · Ecosystem · 0 NEET questions

Stop assuming all ecological pyramids are upright. The Pyramid of Energy is the only one that is strictly, biologically incapable of inversion. If you think an inverted energy pyramid is possible, you have failed the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

The idea

The pyramid of energy represents the total amount of energy at each trophic level per unit area per unit time. It is always upright because energy transfer follows the 10% law, with significant loss as heat at every step. No organism can transfer more energy than it receives. Thus, the base of producers is always the largest.

Why it matters

It reflects the thermodynamic reality that energy conversion is never 100% efficient, leading to a constant loss of energy.

NEET lens

NEET asks this to test your conceptual clarity on the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Remember: Energy pyramids are always upright, while biomass and number pyramids can be inverted. Do not confuse the three. Focus on the 'Energy loss as heat' keyword; it is the standard answer for why inversion is impossible.

Clinical significance

In human physiology, this mirrors the metabolic cost of maintaining homeostasis. When energy intake fails to exceed metabolic expenditure, the system collapses, leading to cachexia or organ failure. Just as in an ecosystem, if the energy input at the base is insufficient, the higher trophic levels cannot be sustained.

Introduction

The pyramid of energy shows the total energy at each trophic level per unit area per unit time. It is always upright and can never be inverted.

Core concept

When energy flows from a particular trophic level to the next, some energy is always lost as heat at each step. Each bar in the energy pyramid indicates the amount of energy present at each trophic level in a given time or annually per unit area. Approximately 10 per cent of the energy is transferred to the next level (Lindeman's 10 per cent law). In contrast, pyramids of numbers and biomass may be inverted (e.g. a single tree supporting many insects; biomass in the sea).

Go deeper

Because of the second law of thermodynamics, energy can never be fully passed on — this is why no ecosystem can have an inverted energy pyramid.

From Class 10

As you go up a food chain, less and less energy is available at each step — so the energy pyramid always narrows upwards.
