NCERT Class 12 · Ecosystem · 0 NEET questions

Stop confusing biomass with energy. Primary productivity is the rate of synthesis, not the standing crop. If you miss this distinction, you lose marks on the very first question of the Ecosystem unit.

The idea

Primary productivity is the rate of biomass or organic matter production per unit area over a time period by producers via photosynthesis. It is measured in weight (g/m²) or energy (kcal/m²). Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) is the total rate of photosynthesis. Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is GPP minus respiration losses (R). Remember: NPP = GPP - R.

Why it matters

It serves as the fundamental energy source for all heterotrophic organisms in the ecosystem.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the units and the NPP formula. Expect questions comparing productivity across different biomes, like why oceans have low productivity despite large area. Memorize the units: g/m²/yr or kcal/m²/yr. Do not confuse 'standing crop' with 'productivity'.

Clinical significance

In human physiology, think of GPP as your total caloric intake and NPP as the energy remaining for growth after basal metabolic rate (BMR) expenditure. If NPP drops in an ecosystem, the entire trophic structure collapses, leading to starvation, much like severe malnutrition in humans.

Introduction

Primary production is the amount of biomass or organic matter produced per unit area over a time period by plants during photosynthesis. The rate of biomass production is called productivity.

Core concept

It is expressed in terms of g−2 yr−1 or (kcal m−2) yr−1 to compare the productivity of different ecosystems. It can be divided into gross primary productivity (GPP: rate of production of organic matter during photosynthesis) and net primary productivity (NPP = GPP − R). Primary productivity depends on the plant species inhabiting a particular area, environmental factors, availability of nutrients and photosynthetic capacity of plants. The annual net primary productivity of the whole biosphere is approximately 170 billion tons (dry weight) of organic matter; the oceans, covering about 70 per cent of the surface, produce only 55 billion tons.

Go deeper

Primary productivity is the base of every food chain — it sets how much energy is available to all consumers in an ecosystem.

From Class 10

Primary productivity is how fast plants make new food using sunlight in an area.
