Vacuoles

வெற்றிடங்கள் (வாக்குவோல்கள்)

NCERT Class 11 · Cell: The Unit of Life · 1 NEET question

Do not mistake the vacuole for an empty space. It is a high-pressure storage unit that dictates plant turgidity. If you ignore the tonoplast, you lose the mechanism of active transport against concentration gradients.

The idea

A vacuole is a membrane-bound space within the cytoplasm containing water, sap, and excretory products. It is enclosed by a single membrane known as the tonoplast. In plant cells, the tonoplast facilitates the transport of ions and other materials against concentration gradients into the vacuole. Consequently, the concentration is significantly higher in the vacuole than in the cytoplasm. In mature plant cells, vacuoles can occupy up to 90% of the total cell volume.

Why it matters

They serve as storage reservoirs for nutrients and waste, and help maintain turgor pressure in plant cells and osmoregulation in protists.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the tonoplast's role in active transport and the 90% volume occupancy in plant cells. Remember: the tonoplast is a single membrane, not a double membrane. Do not confuse this with the nucleus or mitochondria.

Clinical significance

In humans, vacuole-like structures called lysosomes are critical for intracellular digestion. Failure of these membrane-bound systems leads to lysosomal storage diseases, where undigested waste accumulates, causing cellular toxicity and organ failure.

Introduction

Vacuoles are membrane-bound sacs in the cytoplasm. In plant cells, a large central vacuole occupies up to 90% of cell volume, maintaining turgor pressure and storing various substances.

Core concept

Plant central vacuole: bounded by tonoplast (vacuolar membrane), contains cell sap (water, sugars, amino acids, waste products, pigments). Maintains turgor pressure (pushes cytoplasm against wall). Functions: storage, maintains cell volume, contains pigments (anthocyanins → blue/red/purple colors).

Go deeper

Anthocyanins in vacuoles give color to many flowers (rose, violet) and fruits (blueberries). pH of vacuole determines color — more acidic = more red. Vacuolar pH can vary between cells in same tissue.

From Class 10

Plant cells look different from animal cells partly because they have large central vacuoles. These vacuoles serve many functions.
