Nucleus
கரு (நியூக்ளியஸ்)
The nucleus is not just a storage box for DNA; it is the command center that dictates the cell's metabolic fate. If the nucleus is removed, the cell loses its ability to synthesize proteins and eventually dies. Do not confuse the nucleoplasm with the cytoplasm; their chemical compositions are distinct.
The idea
The nucleus is a double-membrane-bound organelle containing chromatin, nucleoplasm, and nucleoli. The nuclear envelope consists of two parallel membranes with a space called the perinuclear space. Nuclear pores allow the bidirectional movement of RNA and proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The nucleolus is the site for active ribosomal RNA synthesis.
Why it matters
It protects the cell's DNA and coordinates complex cellular processes like replication, transcription, and cell division.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the structural components: nuclear envelope, nucleoplasm, and nucleolus. Expect questions on the function of nuclear pores and the nature of chromatin. Remember: mature mammalian RBCs and sieve tube cells of vascular plants lack a nucleus. This is a classic 'exception' trap used in exams.
Clinical significance
Defects in the nuclear lamina, a protein meshwork beneath the nuclear envelope, lead to Progeria. This condition causes rapid premature aging due to the structural instability of the nucleus. When the nuclear envelope fails to maintain integrity, genomic instability triggers cell death.
Introduction
The nucleus is the largest organelle in eukaryotic cells, bounded by a double membrane (nuclear envelope), containing chromatin (DNA + proteins) and the nucleolus.
Core concept
Nuclear envelope: two membranes with nuclear pores (large protein complexes for RNA/protein transport). Nucleoplasm: fluid inside. Chromatin: DNA + histone proteins. Nucleolus: not membrane-bound, site of rRNA synthesis and ribosome assembly. Chromatin condenses into chromosomes during cell division.
Go deeper
Nuclear pores: ~3000 per nucleus, large complexes (~120 proteins). Selective transport: mRNA exits, proteins (transcription factors, histones) enter. Regulation of nuclear transport controls gene expression.
From Class 10
The nucleus is the 'control center' of the cell, containing DNA. It directs all cellular activities.
