Lysosomes
லைசோசோம்கள்
Lysosomes are not just 'suicide bags'. They are the cell's primary waste disposal and recycling units. If they rupture, the cell digests itself. Do not mistake this for a simple organelle; it is a lethal, membrane-bound enzymatic powerhouse.
The idea
Lysosomes are membrane-bound vesicular structures formed by the Golgi apparatus. They contain hydrolytic enzymes—lipases, proteases, and carbohydrases—that function optimally at an acidic pH. These enzymes digest carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. They maintain cellular homeostasis by degrading damaged organelles and foreign materials.
Why it matters
They function as the waste disposal system of the cell, breaking down worn-out organelles and foreign materials to maintain cellular homeostasis.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the origin (Golgi apparatus) and the pH requirement (acidic). Remember: they digest all four major macromolecules. Do not confuse them with vacuoles; lysosomes are active, enzymatic, and acidic.
Clinical significance
Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSDs) occur when specific hydrolytic enzymes are deficient. For example, Tay-Sachs disease results from the inability to break down gangliosides in nerve cells. This leads to toxic accumulation and irreversible neurological damage.
Introduction
Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles containing hydrolytic enzymes (acid hydrolases) that digest macromolecules, old organelles (autophagy), and foreign particles (phagocytosis).
Core concept
Origin: from Golgi apparatus. Contents: ~50 types of acid hydrolases (proteases, lipases, nucleases, glycosidases) active at pH ~5. Membrane has proton pumps maintaining acidity. Functions: intracellular digestion, autophagy (recycling old organelles), immunity (phagosomes fuse with lysosomes to kill bacteria).
Go deeper
Lysosomal storage diseases (e.g., Tay-Sachs): enzyme missing → substrate accumulates → cell death. In Tay-Sachs, hexosaminidase A is absent → GM2 ganglioside accumulates in neurons → neurodegeneration.
From Class 10
Cells need to digest waste materials and foreign particles. Lysosomes are the cell's digestive organelles.
