Bioreactors

NCERT Class 12 · Biotechnology Principles and Processes · 1 NEET question

Stop confusing a simple flask with a bioreactor. A flask is for a lab bench; a bioreactor is for industrial-scale protein production. If you cannot maintain homeostasis in 1000 litres, your entire batch of recombinant DNA product is garbage.

The idea

Bioreactors are large vessels (100-1000 litres) designed to convert raw materials into specific products using microbial, plant, or animal cells. They provide optimal growth conditions including temperature, pH, substrate, salts, vitamins, and oxygen. The stirred-tank bioreactor is the most common type, featuring an agitator system, oxygen delivery system, foam control, and temperature control ports.

Why it matters

Small-scale laboratory cultures cannot yield large quantities of recombinant proteins; bioreactors are necessary for industrial-scale production.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the design and function of stirred-tank bioreactors. Memorise the specific parameters: temperature, pH, oxygen, and foam control. Do not confuse the 'stirred-tank' with 'sparged-tank' functions; know that oxygen transfer is the primary goal. Expect at least one question on the necessity of large-scale production for therapeutic proteins.

Clinical significance

Bioreactors are the backbone of biopharmaceutical production, such as insulin and monoclonal antibodies. If the bioreactor fails to maintain sterility or optimal pH, the resulting protein may misfold, rendering the drug ineffective or immunogenic. In clinical practice, an improperly processed therapeutic protein can trigger severe anaphylactic reactions in patients.

Introduction

Bioreactors are large vessels (100-1000 litres) in which raw materials are biologically converted into specific products using microbial, plant, animal or human cells.

Core concept

A bioreactor provides optimal conditions for achieving the desired product by providing optimum growth conditions (temperature, pH, substrate, salts, vitamins, oxygen). The most commonly used bioreactors are of the stirring type: a stirred-tank bioreactor is usually cylindrical or with a curved base to facilitate mixing of the reactor contents; the stirrer facilitates even mixing and oxygen availability throughout. Alternatively, air can be bubbled through the reactor (sparged stirred-tank). Components: an agitator system, an oxygen delivery system, a foam control system, a temperature control system, a pH control system and sampling ports so small volumes of the culture can be withdrawn periodically.

Go deeper

Small-volume cultures can only give small amounts of product; to produce in large quantities, bioreactors are needed.

From Class 10

A bioreactor is like a huge, carefully controlled cooking pot where microbes grow and make useful products.
