Activation Energy
கிளர்வு ஆற்றல்
Most students fail to realize that chemical reactions in your body would take decades without enzymes. Activation energy is the barrier between a stable substrate and a reactive transition state. If you don't master this, you don't understand metabolism.
The idea
Activation energy is the minimum energy required for a chemical reaction to occur. It is defined as the difference between the average energy content of the substrate and the energy of the transition state. Enzymes act as biological catalysts by lowering this energy barrier. This reduction allows a greater number of substrate molecules to reach the transition state, thereby accelerating the reaction rate.
Why it matters
It acts as a kinetic barrier that prevents spontaneous, uncontrolled reactions, ensuring metabolic processes occur only when catalyzed.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the graphical representation of this concept. You must identify the 'hump' in the energy profile diagram that represents the activation energy. Remember: enzymes lower the activation energy, but they never change the energy level of the substrate or the final product. Expect a question comparing the energy profiles of catalyzed versus uncatalyzed reactions.
Clinical significance
Inborn errors of metabolism often involve defective enzymes that fail to lower activation energy for critical pathways. For example, Phenylketonuria occurs when the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase is deficient. Without the enzyme, the substrate cannot transition to the product, leading to toxic accumulation.
Introduction
Activation energy is the minimum energy required to start a chemical reaction — it represents the energy needed to reach the transition state from which reactants can form products.
Core concept
Activation energy barrier: even exergonic (energy-releasing) reactions need initial energy input to start. Enzymes lower activation energy without being consumed. This allows reactions to occur at body temperature that would otherwise require very high temperatures.
Go deeper
The transition state is the high-energy unstable intermediate. Enzymes stabilize the transition state, reducing the energy required to reach it. The difference in energy between reactants and the transition state is the activation energy.
From Class 10
Chemical reactions in cells need to overcome a barrier to start. This energy barrier is called activation energy.
