Protozoan Groups
புரோட்டோசோவா குழுக்கள்
Do not mistake Protozoans for simple organisms. They are the evolutionary precursors to the Kingdom Animalia, sharing heterotrophic nutrition and predatory behavior. If you confuse their locomotory organelles, you lose marks on a fundamental classification question.
The idea
Protozoans are heterotrophic, primitive relatives of animals. They are classified into four groups based on locomotion: Amoeboid (pseudopodia), Flagellated (flagella), Ciliated (cilia), and Sporozoans (spore-like stage). Amoeboids like Entamoeba are either free-living or parasitic. Sporozoans, such as Plasmodium, lack locomotory organelles in their infectious stage.
Why it matters
They represent diverse evolutionary strategies for heterotrophic survival in aquatic and moist environments.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on matching the organism to its locomotory organelle. Memorize the examples: Amoeba/Entamoeba (Amoeboid), Trypanosoma (Flagellated), Paramoecium (Ciliated), and Plasmodium (Sporozoan). Expect questions on the infectious stage of Plasmodium. Do not confuse the classification criteria; locomotion is the key.
Clinical significance
Entamoeba histolytica causes amoebic dysentery by infecting the human large intestine. Plasmodium species are the causative agents of malaria, a major public health crisis. These organisms demonstrate the devastating impact of parasitic protozoans on human physiology.
Introduction
Plasmodium kills more than 600,000 people every year. It is a protozoan — a single-celled eukaryote that spends part of its life cycle inside a mosquito and part inside a human red blood cell. It is not a bacterium, not a virus, not a fungus. It belongs to a kingdom of extraordinary diversity that Whittaker called Protista.
Core concept
Protozoans are heterotrophic, unicellular eukaryotes. Four groups by locomotion:Amoeboid — pseudopodia; e.g., Amoeba, Entamoeba (amoebic dysentery)Flagellated — flagella; e.g., Euglena, Trypanosoma (sleeping sickness)Ciliated — cilia; e.g., Paramecium (slipper animalcule)Sporozoans — no locomotor structures in adult; mostly parasitic; e.g., Plasmodium (malaria)
Go deeper
Plasmodium is transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito. NEET tests the mosquito vector name, the kingdom (Protista, not Monera), and the classification group (sporozoan).Entamoeba histolytica causes amoebic dysentery — transmitted through contaminated water.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have studied Amoeba and Paramecium as unicellular organisms that lived in water and moved. In Class 11, these are classified within Kingdom Protista under the protozoan group, and you learn how different types move, feed, and cause disease.
