Ecological Diversity

NCERT Class 12 · Biodiversity and Conservation · 0 NEET questions

Do not confuse Ecological Diversity with Species Diversity. Species diversity counts the number of species; Ecological diversity measures the variety of habitats. If you miss this distinction, you lose four marks on a basic conceptual trap.

The idea

Ecological diversity refers to the variety of ecosystems within a geographical region. India exhibits high ecological diversity due to the presence of deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries, and alpine meadows. In contrast, Scandinavian countries like Norway possess significantly lower ecosystem variety. This diversity is a direct result of varying climatic and topographical conditions.

Why it matters

It exists due to variations in climate, geography, and topography, which create different habitats supporting diverse biological communities.

NEET lens

NEET expects you to compare India with Norway specifically. Memorize the list of Indian ecosystems mentioned in NCERT. Expect a 'Statement-based' question where they swap Ecological and Species diversity definitions.

Clinical significance

When ecological diversity collapses, ecosystem services like water purification and nutrient cycling fail. This leads to the loss of natural buffers against zoonotic diseases. A simplified, low-diversity ecosystem is prone to rapid pathogen outbreaks that threaten human health.

Introduction

Ecological diversity is the diversity at the ecosystem level — the variety of ecosystems in a region.

Core concept

Example (NCERT): India, with its deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries and alpine meadows, has a greater ecosystem diversity than a Scandinavian country like Norway. High ecological diversity supports high species diversity, because each ecosystem offers different habitats and niches.

Go deeper

Protecting a range of ecosystems is essential; conserving one species often requires protecting the whole ecosystem it depends on.

From Class 10

India has deserts, mountains, forests, seas and wetlands — many different ecosystems in one country. That is ecological diversity.
