Ground Tissue System
அடிப்படை திசு மண்டலம்
Stop confusing the Ground Tissue System with the Epidermal or Vascular systems. In NEET, if it is not the skin of the plant or the plumbing, it is the ground tissue. This is the bulk of the plant body. Master this, or lose easy marks.
The idea
The ground tissue system comprises all tissues excluding the epidermis and vascular bundles. It consists of simple tissues: parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma. In primary stems and roots, it includes the cortex, pericycle, medullary rays, and pith. In leaves, it consists of thin-walled chloroplast-containing cells called mesophyll.
Why it matters
It provides structural support, storage of nutrients, and performs photosynthesis in leaves (mesophyll). It forms the bulk of the plant body.
NEET lens
NEET asks to identify the components of the ground tissue system in different plant parts. Remember: Mesophyll is the ground tissue of leaves. Do not confuse pith with vascular tissue. Focus on the location of these tissues in dicot vs monocot stems.
Clinical significance
In human biology, the equivalent of ground tissue is the parenchyma of organs like the liver or lungs. When these functional cells fail, as seen in cirrhosis or pulmonary fibrosis, the organ loses its physiological capacity. Just as plant ground tissue provides metabolic support, our parenchymal cells sustain life.
Introduction
The ground tissue system includes all tissues except epidermis and vascular tissues — mainly parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma forming cortex, pith, and mesophyll.
Core concept
Parenchyma: thin-walled, living, versatile — photosynthesis (chlorenchyma), storage, secretion, gas exchange (aerenchyma). Collenchyma: thick corners, living, flexible support — found in hypodermis of dicot stem and leaf petioles. Sclerenchyma: thick, lignified, dead — fibers and sclereids, provides rigid support.
Go deeper
Aerenchyma is parenchyma with large air spaces — found in aquatic plants (Hydrilla, lotus) for buoyancy and gas exchange. Stone cells (sclereids) in pear fruit give it gritty texture.
From Class 10
Besides the vascular tissue and epidermis, plants have a lot of other tissue that fills the spaces. This is the ground tissue system.
