Dorsiventral Leaf Anatomy
இருபக்க வேறுபாடுடைய இலை
Stop confusing dorsiventral leaves with isobilateral ones. In NEET, the distinction between palisade and spongy parenchyma is not just anatomy; it is a question of photosynthetic efficiency. If you cannot identify the adaxial surface, you will lose 4 marks.
The idea
Dorsiventral leaves, typical of dicots, exhibit a clear differentiation between the adaxial and abaxial epidermis. The mesophyll is divided into two distinct regions: the adaxial palisade parenchyma, consisting of vertically placed elongated cells, and the abaxial spongy parenchyma, which contains large air cavities. Stomata are significantly more abundant on the abaxial surface to minimize water loss.
Why it matters
Differentiation into palisade and spongy layers optimizes light absorption and gas exchange for photosynthesis in varying light conditions.
NEET lens
NEET examiners frequently swap 'adaxial' and 'abaxial' in MCQs. Memorize that palisade is always adaxial. Expect a diagram-based question where you must label the mesophyll layers. If the question mentions 'stomata on both surfaces,' it is not a dorsiventral leaf; mark it as isobilateral.
Clinical significance
In plant pathology, the disruption of the spongy parenchyma architecture leads to 'leaf spot' diseases caused by fungal pathogens. When the internal air spaces are compromised, gas exchange fails, leading to localized necrosis. This mirrors the loss of alveolar surface area in human emphysema, where gas exchange efficiency drops drastically.
Introduction
Dorsiventral (bifacial) leaf anatomy, seen in dicots, has differentiated upper (adaxial) and lower (abaxial) surfaces with distinct palisade and spongy mesophyll.
Core concept
Upper epidermis (adaxial): no/few stomata, thick cuticle. Palisade mesophyll: columnar cells, densely packed chloroplasts, main photosynthesis site. Spongy mesophyll: loosely arranged with large intercellular spaces, some chloroplasts. Lower epidermis (abaxial): many stomata. Midrib: large vascular bundle with bundle sheath.
Go deeper
The palisade layer maximizes light capture — columnar cells expose maximum chloroplasts to light. Spongy layer's air spaces facilitate gas exchange. The two layers represent division of labor within the mesophyll.
From Class 10
Dicot leaves have different upper and lower surfaces with distinct layers. This is the dorsiventral leaf structure.
